Using Ebetsu's Sister City Gresham as an Example of Preservation and Utilization

Edgefield, in Gresham Oregon, was built in 1911, as the Multnomah County Poor Farm. In the 1960's, the facility was renamed Edgefield Manor and functioned as a nursing home and eventually closed in the 1980's. McMenamins purchased the property in 1990, and it was transformed into a pub, a restaurant, a winery, a brewery, and a movie theater.

Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland used to be a parking lot. In the 1970's, the City secured the land for public use and the citizens of Portland gathered together to assist in the fundraising and design of their city's "living room". 64,000 people donated money for the square's construction by purchasing bricks.

Vista House was built in 1916 on Crown Point in the western end of the Historic Columbia River Highway as a scenic lookout point because of its panoramic view of the Columbia River. Through donations from visitors to this spectacular site, the aging Vista House is being restored little by little. This facility is operated exclusively by volunteers. .
